  • 1 UIL and National Federation Rules apply to all leagues. Rules may be modified based on age and experience of players in each division.
  • 2 The controlling authority in the gym is the referees. This includes all activities before, during, and after the game. Referees are authorized to call 911 when necessary.
  • 3 Referees determine game pace — coaches must leave the area promptly after games, especially when emotions run high.
  • 4 Sportsmanship is emphasized. Any profanity or abuse of officials, scorekeepers, or timekeepers will result in a technical foul.
Important: At no point should time rules be altered from what is written. No coaches or parents should yell at the score table for incorrect score or time. Repeat offenders will be asked to leave the gym.
  • 1 Running clock at all times. Clock stops during: timeouts, free throws, referee requests, and all whistles in the last 2 minutes of each half and overtime.
  • 2 Each team gets 2 timeouts per half (30 seconds each). Unused timeouts do not carry over.
  • 3 The timekeeper is in control of the clock. Coaches with clock issues must address the referee, not the timekeeper directly.
  • 1 At the start of the 4th period, if there is a 15+ point difference, the clock runs continuously until the score is within 14 points.
  • 2 No full-court press is allowed when the point differential reaches 12 or more points at any time during the game.
  • 3 When leading by 12+, the leading team must fall back to the half-court line on made baskets.
Teams that fail to comply with the mercy rule after a warning may receive a technical foul.
  • 1 1st/2nd Grade: Man-to-man defense only. No pressing, no double-teaming, no zone defense. No 3-point shots.
  • 2 3rd/4th Grade: Man-to-man defense only. No full-court press. Half-court trapping and double-teaming is allowed.
  • 3 5th/6th Grade: Any defense allowed. Full-court press allowed (except during mercy rule).
  • 4 7th–9th Grade: Full UIL rules with Be Someone modifications. All defensive styles permitted.
  • 1 League-issued uniforms required. Players without proper uniforms must notify a Be Someone representative before the game.
  • 2 No jewelry during games. Players will be asked to remove it before play begins.
  • 3 Each team must provide a scorekeeper and timekeeper per game. If Be Someone cannot provide these, each team provides 1 person.
  • 4 Pre-game coach meeting with referees is mandatory to confirm rosters and discuss any issues.

  • 1 Four divisions separated by age group or grade level: Freshman (1st/2nd), Junior (3rd/4th), Senior (5th/6th), and Varsity (7th/8th).
  • 2 A player MAY request to "Play Up" a maximum of ONE year above their grade level. Decisions are final only AFTER player evaluations and board/coach discussion.
  • 3 All Texas UIL Volleyball Rules apply unless otherwise noted in Be Someone league rules.
  • 1 Net height: 7'0" for all divisions. Court dimensions follow standard volleyball measurements.
  • 2 Knee pads are highly recommended for all players. League-issued jerseys are required.
  • 3 No jewelry during play. Hair must be secured and not obstruct vision or play.
  • 1 Coaches must submit a lineup before each set. Players rotate clockwise after winning a sideout.
  • 2 Free substitutions are allowed during dead balls. All players should receive equal playing time throughout the season.
  • 3 If a team has more than 6 players, substitutions should rotate players equally across sets.
  • 1 Underhand and overhand serves are both permitted in all divisions.
  • 2 Freshman/Junior divisions: Servers may move up to the 10-foot line if unable to serve from the end line.
  • 3 Let serves (serves that hit the net and go over) are legal and in play.
  • 4 Each server gets one re-serve per rotation for a bad toss (ball must not leave the server's hand).
  • 1 A team must have a minimum of 5 players present within 5 minutes of the scheduled start time, or the match is a forfeit.
  • 2 If a team has fewer than 5, the opposing team wins 2 sets to 0.
  • 3 In forfeit situations, a player from the opposing team (same age group) may play on the forfeiting team for fun/practice.
GAMES SHOULD ALWAYS BE PLAYED with the players available if at all possible. The goal is development and playing time for every athlete.

K/1st Grade 2nd/3rd Grade 4th/5th Grade
  • 1 Center: Snaps the ball to the QB and can run out as an eligible receiver after the snap.
  • 2 Quarterback: Receives the snap and initiates play. The QB cannot directly run with the ball across the line of scrimmage — must hand off or pass first.
  • 3 Receivers/RBs: Any player is an eligible receiver and can receive a handoff or catch a pass. At least two receivers must be on the LOS at the snap.
  • 4 Motions: One receiver or back may go in motion pre-snap (lateral or backward only). Forward motion or two players in motion = false start.
K/1 and 2/3 divisions: The center has the option to "side snap" the ball for a more accurate delivery to the QB.
  • 1 The ball is spotted where the runner's hips are when the flag is pulled — not the position of the ball.
  • 2 No diving, leaping, or jumping to avoid a flag pull. This is considered flag guarding.
  • 3 Spinning is allowed, but players spinning out of control will be called for flag guarding.
  • 4 No blocking or screening at any time. Offensive players without the ball must stop moving once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage.
  • 5 Flag guarding (stiff arm, lowering elbow/head, blocking access to flags) is an illegal act and will be penalized.
  • 1 All passes must be thrown overhand, from behind the line of scrimmage, and thrown forward. No laterals, pitching, or double passes allowed.
  • 2 Only one forward pass per play. Shovel passes are permitted behind the LOS.
  • 3 Interceptions are live and can be returned. The intercepting team takes possession at the spot if downed.
  • 4 Receivers must have at least one foot inbounds for a completed catch.
  • 1 4th/5th division: No coaches on the field. All plays called from the sidelines.
  • 2 K/1 and 2/3 divisions: 1 coach allowed on the field per team.
Offense: Once the ball is in play, the coach cannot communicate until the play is over. Violation = unsportsmanlike penalty. Second offense = coach removed from field during plays.
Defense: The coach must make every attempt to stay out of the way. If the official believes the coach is obstructing play = unsportsmanlike penalty. Third offense of the season = removed from field for remainder of season.
  • 1 League-issued uniforms required. Cleats with exposed metal are not allowed.
  • 2 Players must wear shorts/pants without pockets or belt loops. Pockets must be taped. Games will not be delayed for taping.
  • 3 Mouthpieces are required during all practices and games.
  • 4 All jewelry must be removed before the game starts. Player will be subbed out if asked to remove jewelry mid-game.
  • 5 Hats with bills are permitted but must be worn backwards. Sunglasses are permitted but at the player's own risk.

Penalties are behavior-oriented and designed to teach youth players respect and good sportsmanship. Referees can also penalize fans who aren't keeping the field safe and kid-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from parents and coaches

Games should always be played if at all possible. If a team is short, a player from the opposing team (same age group) may play on the short-handed team so everyone gets playing time. A formal forfeit only occurs if a team cannot field the minimum number of players within 5 minutes of the scheduled start.

Players may request to play up a maximum of one year/grade above their current level. These decisions are made after player evaluations and discussion between the board and coaches. Requests should be submitted during registration.

During games, only the head coach may address the referee about rule questions. For post-game concerns, contact a Be Someone representative directly. We're committed to fair and transparent resolution of any issues.

For outdoor sports (Flag Football), games may be postponed or cancelled due to inclement weather. Be Someone will communicate cancellations through official channels as early as possible. Indoor sports (Basketball, Volleyball) will proceed as scheduled unless the facility is closed.
